Trotz seines unbestreitbaren Könnens verlief seine Zeit bei Newcastle aufgrund von Problemen außerhalb des Spielfelds und einem Streit mit dem Management im Sande. Er wurde an Hull City ausgeliehen, aber seine Magie konnte in dieser Saison nie vollständig entfesselt werden, sodass die Fans sich nach mehr von seiner unberechenbaren Brillanz sehnten.
